Learn the Game

Learn rugby, from the ground up.

Rugby is simpler than it looks. Here's what you need to know to walk onto a Berserkers practice with confidence — even if the only rugby you've seen was a highlight reel.

The basics in 60 seconds

Fifteen players a side. Two 40-minute halves. Move the ball forward by running and kicking; pass only sideways or backward. Score a try (5 points) by grounding the ball over the opponent's try line, then kick a conversion for two more.

The pitch

100m long, 70m wide. Try lines at each end, dead-ball lines behind them. A dead-ball area gives kickers and defenders room to work.

Scoring

Try = 5. Conversion = 2. Penalty kick = 3. Drop goal = 3. Most points wins; ties are common in league play.

Set pieces

Scrums and lineouts restart play. Both look chaotic and are actually the most choreographed moments in the game.
